Its such a game, where you don't need to know much, don't need to spend a lot of time and can still enjoy. And the real enthusiasm among people who follow the sport around you is contagious. Simply unavoidable at times.
I'll tell you how I started watching it. Couple of my friends starting fighting over Nistelrooy and Henry a decade ago. I wanted to check out what all the fuss was about and decided overnight that Netherlands/Manchester United and Nistelrooy are my favorites.
And you know what, that small bit of glory hunting has made me a huge fan now. My country doesn't even rank in the top 120 in the game (Yes, almost all countries have national teams. How many sports have that btw?), but I still love it to the core. Millions around me do. Its contagious man. Very difficult to say why, but its the truth.
Around WC, the above things explode. Some fall in love with the game while others come back after four years for the same bit. Its contagious. It is.

Its all about the love of the sport that defines its popularity.
For some people "Football is not a matter of life and death but way more than that"
For some "Football is life the rest are mere details."
Popularity of a sport is defined by the passion people have for the game. Football is not overrated. The popularity it receives is because of all the passionate fans who follow it with all their hearts.

You should come to India during IPL season. Even a stupid tourney like IPL is so so overrated in India. You will understand that teh hype around football is nothing before the stupid game played by 10 countries.
Do you think football is overrated?
