*How We Got Here*
About two weeks ago, I overheard a friend of mine calling someone, to inform him of the death of a popular wrestler. Though I am not a wrestling fan, but the name was quite familiar, because I have neighbours, and colleagues at work, that are much into wrestling. So I asked if she was sure of the information? She said she was very sure! She is someone I respect her information, as she has penchant for checking things in the internet. So I took the information to be authentic. When I got home, I told my neighbours about it. They asked if I was sure? I told them that I am not a wrestling fan, but the person that told me have a reputation for not carrying unconfirmed news. They were still not satisfied. Before you know it, they have gone to the Internet to cross check. They later came to tell me that it was not true
About two months back, there was an argument in my compound between the fans of the music artist Davido and that of TuFace. The argument was whether Davido really had thirty (30)billion in his account. My attention was drawn to the argument and I told them I don't know. Quickly, they went online, and got a list of the top ten (10) richest Nigerian musical artist.
Still in that same compound, I met them repeating this old story of how India defeated Nigeria in a football match by 99 goals to 1. And how Late Samuel Okparaji was the one that scored the only goal, and how that led to his death. This time, I didn't wait to be invited to the discussion. I came out from my living room laughing seriously. I was surprised because the persons giving these narratives were not kids. So I asked, who ref the match?
If the game is for 90mins, do they score a goal every 40secs?
They were still holding on to their opinions that it happened because India played the game with spiritual powers. This time I was the one asking them to check the internet as they have done in time past. But they refused. So, I checked the internet and the history of India football was there for all to see.
Why these narratives?
My neighborhood is a microcosm of the nation at large. We are here today because we tend to major on things that doesn't add value to us. Now tell me if Davido had 30 billion in his account or not, how does it increase our standard of living?
If an entertainment wrestler dies or not, how does it make us better? *"Who dem epp?"*
We waste our data on trivial issues. Instead of searching for productive information that will help sharpen our lives, get right answers to the lies we once held as truth, know latest record breaking advancement in various fields of life around the world, etc. We spend mobile data downloading things of little or no value.
Misplaced priorities is a major route that led us to this present destination.
It's another Monday morning, another opportunity to set your priorities right!
Have a great day!
